I've been directing Morning Edition since 1998. I use every type of music available to me. There is no underlying musical theme to the program, e.g., all jazz, all organ music, etc. The music is dictated by the program, which changes every day. So the music does,
too. We use 16 pieces of music for the show. It takes me about an hour to select them. I'll typically listen to 50 or 60 snippets every morning, trying to find the perfect complement to the news story. Picking the right music is a delicate thing, especially at 3AM. It does tend to get my day going in the right direction, though.
