I've been directing for about two years, and it continues to be one of
the favorite things I do at NPR. (I also produce news and arts
features.) The combination of adrenaline and fun makes it a great job.
Ok, to the music. John Kusiak is one of my favorite composers. Why? His
music is wacky, emotional, unpredictable and most of all fun. It's just
the thing to add a little twist to a show! And while the music shouldn't
move the focal point from the reporting, it should add something
different from the reporting. Kusiak's music does that. Enjoy!

I first learned to direct in 1998 on the program Sounds Like Science and
I've been splitting the directing tasks on All Things Considered Weekend
since Fall 2002. It's fun to work with another director because we can share
ideas and favorites. NPR directors usually work with instrumental music, but
I often like to sneak in short buttons from indie rock or pop. When I
started directing, I became very interested in film soundtracks, so one of
my favorite albums is Alloy Orchestra's Silents, which is new music they
wrote to accompany silent films like "Metropolis" and "Nosferatu."
