We aren't done here yet. In fact, we're just getting started. But welcome! It's In Rehearsal, the new Web show from NPR. Our idea is to give you a look inside the creative process of musicians from diverse musical traditions. And we don't want you to wait stiffly in the dining room for the music to be served. We're inviting you into the kitchen, to hear the skillet sizzle. What's in the mix? For starters, we have NPR radio features and video you can only find here, on our Web show. We also have Web-only interviews, demos of musical techniques, and some fascinating raw sound. Flubs are fair game. So are magical moments when something wonderful rises up out of the racket and clatter. The first edition of In Rehearsal features the Kronos Quartet a string quartet whose sense of adventure has led them on musical journeys from Africa to John Zorn. It has also led the group to let us record them rehearsing and mixing a piece called "Mini Skirt." It's music by the late Mexican bandleader Juan Garcia Esquivel, arranged by composer Osvaldo Golijov. The tune appears on the Kronos album Nuevo, produced by Gustavo Santaolalla and released in April 2002. For this edition of In Rehearsal, Erik Dunham shot the video and photos. He conceived the Web design while Katie Parker created the graphic design, typography, and illustrations. Michael Yoch wrangled the code for the site. Rima Snyder, Kevin Wait, Leo Del Aguila, and Michael Schweppe were our sound engineers. Anya Grundmann edited the radio segments for Performance Today, and Penny Hain and Jeffrey Freymann-Weyr mixed them. Cara Fogarty edited the Web copy. Debra Schifrin was our field producer in San Francisco. Special thanks go out to Chris Mandra and Elizabeth Blair. We'd love to hear what you think of our work-in-progress. So e-mail us. Let us know what flops, and what grooves. Let us know about the perfect question we haven't thought to ask. And if you have an idea for a group we should feature on a future edition of In Rehearsal, by all means, let's get it in the mix.
