Jon Faddis and Teranga at the Jazz Standard
Listen to Part 1
Listen to Part 2
In Memory of Mildred Marie Faddis, 1923-2006
For ten seasons, trumpeter Jon Faddis was Musical Director of the Carnegie Hall Jazz band, on the air with new concerts from Carnegie Hall four times a year on JazzSet. Now we're catching up with the Maestro as he launches his CD Teranga at the Jazz Standard in New York City.
Whether he's purring into his mute or releasing a meteor shower of spectacular phrases, Faddis plays with authority. Also with dynamics. In fact, during the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band days, he chided the JazzSet team, saying that our radio broadcasts squeezed the band's wide dynamic range into a smaller sonic package. Now, just as the Jazz Band did, the quartet moves from the softest softs to full bore with many points in between. Faddis talks through his horn, holding up his end of an animated conversation. Each player is a great team member, and Faddis adds two high-energy percussionists from Senegal to the quartet for extra thunder.
His new CD is entitled Teranga. In Faddis' words: "Taking its name from a traditional Sengalese value, Teranga is the belief that those who openly welcome a visitor ensure that their own children will never find themselves in a desperate situation when away from home."
