Dominick Farinacci
Just a few years ago when Dominick Farinacci was 15, he was with the Tri-C JazzFest High School All-Stars in Cleveland Ohio, on a program with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Wynton Marsalis heard Dominick, and invited him backstage to hear more.
|
Then by coincidence, Dominick had a gig at a Cleveland restaurant where Wynton showed up for dinner. A three-hour jam session ensued, and a career was born. Now Dominick studies at the Institute for Jazz Studies at the Juilliard School, and he's working hard to make the leap from teen sensation to professional trumpeter and bandleader. He's on his way!
Adam Birnbaum is on piano, Carmen Intorre Jr. on drums, and veteran James Genus on bass. Farinacci's recent CDs, Say It and Besame Mucho, are on the Japanese M&I label. Dominick performed in the Discovery Series at the Kennedy Center.

Bill Charlap
Headliner Bill Charlap teaches at Juilliard. He's a study in the rewards of commitment. He's played piano since early childhood, knows a seemingly unlimited number of songs and knows them well.
|
He's worked with veterans Gerry Mulligan and Phil Woods, and has led his own trio for almost a decade. His mates are Peter Washington on bass and Kenny Washington on drums. Together with Bill, they stay busy.
After a CD of music by Leonard Bernstein, the trio focused on one of
Bernstein's spiritual predecessors with Bill Charlap Plays George Gershwin: The American Soul, both from Blue Note. Their set starts fast, ends with two ballads, and is hand-picked for JazzSet by Bill.
Music
"All Through the Night" (Cole Porter)
"Bon Ami" (Jim Hall)
"While We're Young" (Alec Wilder & Bill Engvick)
"Last Night When We Were Young" (Harold Arlen & Yip Harburg)
