Leadership in America
October 24: Roy Williams
Roy Williams, currently in his thirteenth season as head
coach of the University of Kansas (KU) men's basketball team, is one of the
most respected coaches in NCAA basketball history. He has lead the KU
Jayhawks to 11 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and, with a 329-82
career record, his teams have won more games in the first twelve seasons of
a coaching career than any other NCAA coach.
At the end of the 1999-2000 school year, Roy Williams faced
the most important decision of his career when he was offered the position
of head coach at the University of North Carolina (UNC). The position would
have been the fulfillment of a boyhood dream and a chance to continue the
legacy of his mentor, former UNC Coach Dean Smith. Williams, however, chose
to stay at KU.
Listen on Tuesday, Oct. 24, as NPR's Susan Stamberg
speaks with Roy Williams about why he stayed and how he views coaching and
leadership.
