'Strange Happenings'

Marie, the name of the young heroine in E.T.A Hoffmann's original story, begins her fantastical journey as the clock strikes midnight and an army of mice descend on her family's living room:

But then she heard giggling and squeaking all around her, followed by the sounds of a thousand little feet scampering behind the walls, and a thousand little lights peered out through the cracks in the woodwork. ... Soon they were scampering all over the room, bigger and bigger bands of them, and in the end they formed ranks, just as Fritz's soldiers did before marching off to war.
