July 17-18, 1943, diary entries

At left, Lt. Winnia's last entry, July 17, 1943, reporting six Japanese ships sunk and a colleague "shot down in flames... Today was one of history." On the right, the final entry on the following day, reporting Winnia "lost in a dog fight over Kahili" in the southwest Pacific, is believed to have been written by Lt. Alonzo B. Treffer. Winnia's mentor and division leader, Treffer kept the diary after the war.
