John C. Bogle is one of the mythical figures of the mutual fund industry. During a career that spans almost half a century, the blunt, thrifty founder and former chairman and CEO of The Vanguard Group built the fund industry's leader in indexing and low-cost funds. Often a speaker on the investor conference circuit, Bogle -– who is now president of the Bogle Financial Markets Research Center -- has built a reputation as an outspoken critic of the way many mutual funds are marketed and the high fees and hidden costs often charged by companies.

Bogle’s interest in the mutual fund industry began at Princeton University, where he graduated magna cum laude in economics in 1951. He wrote his senior thesis on mutual funds, then a small segment of the financial-services industry, and after graduation went to work for Wellington Management Company. In 1974, when Wellington Management fired him as president but retained him to handle its mutual funds, he created Vanguard.

Called one of the four “giants of the 20th century” by Fortune magazine in 1999, Bogle has left his stamp far beyond the walls of Pennsylvania-based Vanguard. He was a member of the board of governors of the Investment Company Institute from 1969 to 1974; he served as its chairman in 1969 and 1970. He also served as chairman of the Investment Companies Committee of the National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc. In 1991, he was named to the Market Oversight and Financial Services Advisory Committee of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and six years later he began serving on the Independence Standards Board.

A recipient of many awards and honorary doctorates, Bogle has received the lifetime Award of Distinction from the Financial Analysts of Philadelphia and was named Fund Leader of the Year in 1996 by Fund Action magazine. In 1998, he received the Award for Professional Excellence from the Association for Investment Management and Research, and a year later was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Fixed Income Analysts Society. Bloomberg Personal Finance has designated him as one of "12 Minds That Made the Market" for his influence on how U.S. families invest.

The author of numerous articles and several books on investing, Bogle is a director and chairman of the finance committee of The Mead Corporation, a director of Chris-Craft Industries, and a former director of the Princeton University Investment Company. He also serves as chairman of the National Constitution Center and as a trustee of the American Indian College Fund.

Bogle, a New Jersey native, was born in Montclair on May 8, 1929. He and his wife, Eve, who live in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, have six children.
