The ICO Factor - Inspiration, Conviction, and Organization
Darrell Green can lay claim to many titles that no athlete would mind
having on a resume: record-setting Washington Redskin, the world's
fastest athlete, three-time Super Bowl player. But he's proudest of his
achievements off the football field, in particular the creation of the
Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation (DGYLF), which he founded in 1988.
Its centerpiece is the Darrell Green Learning Center (DGLC) in
Washington, D.C., a city Green has called home for many years. The
center offers tutoring, job counseling, and computer training to at-risk
children, as well as chances to participate in field trips and win
awards for high academic achievement.
"Through our Youth Life Learning Center, we are reaching young
people whose lives are falling apart because they don't have family
structure or proper adult role models," Green writes in a letter to
supporters. "These boys and girls don't need charity, they need
opportunities." Green, who says being a good father and husband is "his
best accomplishment," speaks from personal experience. His parents
divorced, and he credits other role models and mentors with helping him
"build an inner moral strength to see me through my life as a
professional athlete, husband, father, church member and neighbor."
The Houston, Texas, native finished college 15 years after
interrupting his education at Texas A&I University to become the
Redskins' top draft choice in 1983. On May 10, 1998, he received a
Bachelor of Science degree in General Studies/Social Sciences from Saint
Paul's College in Lawrenceville, Virginia. A year later, Marymount
University conferred upon him the honorary degree Doctor of Humane
Letters for his many humanitarian and charitable activities.
