Donald J. Carty is Chairman and CEO of AMR Corporation, the parent company of American Airlines. His topic for the National Press Club is "Securing the Future of Commercial Aviation."
Carty began his career at American Airlines in 1979 as vice president for operations research and information systems planning. He rose through the ranks of American, becoming senior vice president and controller by 1983. After a two-year hiatus heading Canadian Pacific Airlines, he returned to American, where he was elected senior vice president of airline planning.
Between 1989 and 1995, Mr. Carty was executive vice president of finance and planning for AMR Corporation and American Airlines. From 1995 until becoming chairman in 1998, he was the principal airline executive for both companies. He was responsible for all operations of the American Airlines and American Eagle domestic and international routes.
Before joining American, he spent seven years in various management positions with Celanese Canada, Ltd., Air Canada and the Canadian Pacific Railway.
He is a graduate of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He holds an MBA from Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration. He serves on the board of directors of Dell Computer. He is also a member of the board of trustees of Southern Methodist University, the Harvard Business School Visiting Committee, the advisory board of the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and the Southern Methodist University Cox School of Business Executive Board.
He is a member of the Dallas Citizens Council. Carty and his wife Ana live in Dallas.
