Since his start in the pharmaceutical industry, Robert Ingram has moved steadily through the ranks. Now chief operating officer and president of pharmaceutical operations at GlaxoSmithKline, a pharmaceutical research and development company in Research Triangle Park, N.C., Ingram began his career as a sales representative for the company that would later become Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals. From there, he advanced into government and public affairs and eventually left Dow in 1985 as vice president of public affairs to become vice president of government affairs at Merck. In 1988, he was promoted to president of Merck Frosst Canada.
In 1994 he was named president and chief executive officer of Glaxo Wellcome and became chief operating officer and president of pharmaceutical operations after the merger of Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham in December 2000.
In addition to his role in the pharmaceutical industry, Ingram serves on the boards of numerous community and civic organizations. He is a member of the American Red Cross Biomedical Services Board, the PhRMA Board and Executive Committee, the advisory board of the Chemical Heritage Foundation, the U.S. Committee for UNICEF, the Board of Trustees of the American Cancer Society, the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the Board of Directors of Project HOPE, the Dean's Corporate Council of Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, and the Dean's Advisory Board of Eastern Illinois University, among many others.
Ingram holds a bachelor's in business administration from Eastern Illinois University and now resides in North Carolina with his wife and three children.
