The 2002 congressional campaigns are coming to a close, with less than three weeks until the election. Two members of Congress with particularly broad interests in the nation's Congressional campaigns are Reps. Tom Davis (R-VA) and Nita Lowey (D-NY). They each chair their party's Congressional Campaign Committees. The committees are dedicated to raising money to support candidates, as well as to providing technical, electoral research, and voter turnout assistance to the Congressional campaigns.
Nita Lowey represents New York's 18th District, covering parts of the Bronx, Queens and Westchester Country. She is in her seventh term in Congress, and is a member of the House Appropriations Committee. She was born in the Bronx and is a graduate of Mt. Holyoke College.
Lowey was nominated to head the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) after the 2000 elections by House Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt (D-MO). The House Democratic Caucus then ratified Lowey's selection. The DCCC is not affiliated with the Democratic Party. She is the first woman and the first New Yorker to chair the DCCC. Lowey does not face a GOP opponent in the 2002 campaign.
Tom Davis represents Northern Virginia's 11th District, and is in his fourth term. Davis is a member of the House Government and Reform Committee where he serves as chairman of the Subcommittee on the District of Columbia and is also a member of the House Commerce Committee.
Following the 1998 elections, Davis was elected for the House Republican Conference as chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) for the 106th Congress, a House leadership position. He does not face opposition from a Democrat in the upcoming election.
Davis was born in Minot, North Dakota. He is a graduate of Amherst College, and served in the U.S. Army. He earned a law degree from the University of Virginia.
