Gen. James L. Jones is the 32nd Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps. Jones has spent 35 years as a Marine, during which time he has earned the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, a Silver Star Medal, a Legion of Merit with three gold stars, a Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Prior to assuming his current post, Jones served as the military assistant to former Defense Secretary William Cohen.
Born in Kansas City, Mo., Jones grew up in France, where his father worked after leaving the Marine Corps. Gen. Jones returned to the United States to attend the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, where he earned a B.S. in 1966.
In his 35-year Marine career, Gen. Jones has served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans, Policies and Operations at the Marine Corps headquarters in Washington, D.C.; director of the Expeditionary Warfare Division at the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations; and Commanding General, 2nd Marine Division, Marine Forces Atlantic. He has also served as deputy director of the U.S. European Command, before being reassigned as chief of staff for the Joint Task Force Provide Promise, for operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia.
Earlier in his career, Gen. Jones served as commanding officer for the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, and participated in Operation Provide Comfort. He also served as military secretary to the Commandant of the Marine Corps; Marine Corps liaison officer to the U.S. Senate and as commander of the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, 1st Marine Division.
Jones has been stationed all over the world, including Vietnam, Japan and Germany.
