Sean O'Keefe is the 10th administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, a post he's held since Dec. 21, 2001. As administrator, O'Keefe leads the NASA team and manages its resources, as NASA seeks to advance exploration in aeronautics and space technologies.
O'Keefe first joined the Bush administration in January 2001, serving for nearly a year as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget and as deputy assistant to the president. He oversaw the preparation and management of the federal budget and government wide-management initiatives across the executive branch.
Prior to assuming his duties at NASA, O'Keefe was a professor of business and government policy at Syracuse University. He also served as the director of National Security Studies, a joint Syracuse-Johns Hopkins education program for senior military and civilian Department of Defense managers. Before 1996, O'Keefe was a professor of business administration and Assistant to the Senior Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School at the Pennsylvania State University.
In 1992, during President George H.W. Bush's administration, O'Keefe was appointed Secretary of the Navy. Prior to that, O'Keefe served for three years as comptroller and chief financial officer of the Department of Defense.
O'Keefe earned his bachelor's degree in 1977 from Loyola University in New Orleans. He also holds a master's degree in public administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He and his wife, Laura, live in Virginia with their three children.
