L. Paul Bremer oversees the reconstruction of Iraq as head of its governing body, the Coalition Provisional Authority. Bremer discusses the progress of current stabilization and rebuilding efforts.
Spanning 23 years, Bremer's State Department career included assignments to Afghanistan, Malawi and Norway. In 1983, he was appointed ambassador to the Netherlands, where he served for three years. Later, he became President Reagan's Ambassador at Large for Counter Terrorism. Bremer received many medals for his service, including two Presidential Meritorious Service Awards and the State Department Superior Honor Award.
Outside of government, Bremer led the Marsh Crisis Consulting Company before being appointed U.S. civilian administrator of Iraq. Prior to his tenure at Marsh, he was managing director at Kissinger Associates.
Continuing his focus on terrorism, Bremer has served and led many national panels, including the National Commission on Terrorism, which House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert appointed him to in 1999. In 2002, President Bush named Bremer to the Homeland Security Advisory Council.
Bremer received his bachelor's degree from Yale University and a CEP from the Institut D'Etudes Politiques of the University of Paris. He has also received a master's degree in business administration from Harvard University.
