FDA Chairman Mark McClellan

Mark McClellan was sworn in as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration on Nov. 14, 2002.

Prior to becoming FDA commissioner, McClellan was a member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers, where he advised on domestic economic issues. He also served as a senior policy director for health care and related economic issues for the White House.

McClellan has held a variety of positions at Stanford University, including associate professor of economics, associate professor of medicine, internist and director of the Program on Health Outcomes Research. He was also a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. McClellan has been a member of the National Cancer Policy Board of the National Academy of Sciences and an associate editor at the Journal of Health Economics. From 1998-99, he was deputy assistant secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy.

Dr. McClellan has been recognized for his research on the economic and policy factors influencing the quality of health care. He is a two-time recipient of the Arrow Award for Outstanding Research in Health Economics.

McClellan earned his medical degree from the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology and his doctorate in economics from MIT. He completed his residency training in internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

McClellan is married and has two daughters.
