Chairman of the American Cancer Society

John Seffrin

Dr. John Seffrin heads the American Cancer Society, a position he's held since 1992. He spoke to the National Press Club about cancer research and the difficulty reporters -- and scientists -- face when analyzing potential breakthroughs in cancer research.

"Actual translation of new discoveries into effective interventions that benefit real people in the real world... is... extraordinarily difficult," he said in his speech to the Press Club. "Even though we now have the best chance in all of history to end he scourge of the last century -- early in the new century -- our experience and our understanding of the disease tells us there will be no single turning point, no three-inch headlines, no magic bullet."

Dr. Seffrin was previously a professor of health education and chairman of the Department of Applied Health Science at Indiana University.
