CDC Director Dr. Julie L. Gerberding

Dr. Julie L. Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, spoke to the National Press Club about current and potential new threats to public health, including the potential re-appearance of SARS. "I can't think of any infectious disease that emerged once and went away on its own," Gerberding says. "I think we need to expect that SARS will [re-appear] somewhere, someday, and we need to be prepared." Dr. Gerberding took the top position at the CDC in 2002. She previously served as acting deputy director of the CDC's National Center for Infectious Diseases, where she headed the response to the anthrax mailings in 2001.
