John DeStefano, Jr., mayor of New Haven, Conn.

New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. took office in 1994 and has led a city that's seen crime drop sharply and a renewed focus on the arts. His Connecticut town, home to Yale University, was named an All-America City in 1998. DeStefano serves as the president of the National League of Cities, where he's pushed for education reform and affordable housing legislation. He spoke to the Press Club about investing in American cities' "physical and social infrastructure" as a 2004 election issue.
