Jonathan Majiyagbe, president of Rotary International, spoke to the Press Club about the organization's worldwide effort to eradicate polio. Polio remains endemic in six countries -- India, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Niger, Egypt and Pakistan. "Just eight years ago," Majiyagbe said, "polio paralyzed more than 75,000 children across [Africa]. Last year, fewer than 500 cases were reported." Rotary is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and UNICEF to make polio the first disease eradicated in the 21st century.
