Catherine Reynolds created a fortune by turning around a failing student loan company. Now, as the head of the philanthropic Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation, she gives away millions of dollars to charities and the arts. In 2001 Reynolds offered $38 million to the Smithsonian institution, but when she and the Smithsonian couldn't agree on how the money would be spent, she withdrew the gift. "This absolutely stunned the museum and philanthropic establishment," Reynolds said in her speech on money, women and power. "I've caused some controversy in the musty, stodgy gentlemen's club of philanthropy."
