Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld told the National Press Club that the United States must continue to push forward in a global struggle against extremism and rejected calls for withdrawal from Iraq. "Sept. 10, 2001, was not the last day of world innocence," he said in his speech. "It was, however, the last day of America's lack of understanding of a worldwide extremist movement determined to terrorize, to defeat, to destroy civilized people everywhere."
