David Eisner, CEO, the Corporation for National and Community Service told the National Press Club that since Sept. 11, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has shown a steady climb each year in the number of Americans who served their communities through volunteer activities.

The "multi-year climb in civic engagement is extremely unusual," Eisner said in his speech. "If we get this right, we can open the door to a kind of connectedness and responsible citizenship that America hasn't experienced since 1941 and the 25 years after Pearl Harbor."

The Corporation for National and Community Service administers the Senior Corps, AmeriCorps and Learn & Serve America programs.
