Pianist, composer, and author Robin Meloy Goldsby hails from Pittsburgh. Her father, Bob Rawsthornem was a professional musician and played the drums on the PBS program Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. |
She began playing the piano as a young girl, and through her familial association with the Mr. Rogers show, Goldsby found herself in show business, acting and playing piano in a number of local productions.
Goldsby attended Chatham College where she was studying to be an actress. On break from school one summer, Goldsby took a job waiting tables in Nantucket. In an effort to keep up her piano chops, she found a local club and asked to practice on the clubs piano in the morning. She was soon offered a job as the house pianist, and though she knew very few tunes at the time, she worked quickly to develop her repertoire. Goldsby took her new found skills back to Pittsburgh where she worked in various clubs to help pay her way through college.
Goldsby moved to New York in 1980 and made a career of playing in the lobbies and lounges in some of the city's most notable hotels including the Grand Hyatt, The Waldorf Astoria, The Plaza, and the Marriott Marquis. Goldsby currently resides in Germany with her husband, jazz bassist, John Goldsby. In addition to raising two children, her other various projects have included a children's radio play for German Public Radio, collaborations with European and American Jazz artists, and two independently released CDs. Her most recent work is a book chronicling her life as a lounge pianist called Piano Girl; Lessons in Life, Music, and the Perfect Blue Hawaiian.
