Guitarist Julian Lage hails from Santa Rosa, Calif. He began playing the guitar at age five, after watching his father and his older brother play the instrument. |
His earliest lessons, given to him by his father, were based in the blues and improvisation. He progressed quickly and by age 10 he was playing professionally and gigging with established blues musicians.
At age 12, Lage was asked to play on the 2000 Grammy Awards as a part of youth ensemble. Several weeks later, he received a letter from the jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton, who'd seen him play at the event. Burton, who is known for discovering new talent, asked Lage to sit in with his band. After that "audition," the two quickly set about playing with each other on a regular basis, doing minitours with Burton's band.
At age 17, Lage made his first recording with Burton for the album Generations, which was released in 2004. The album also included some of Lage's own compositions. He continues to play and tour with Burton's Generations Quintet.
In his short but impressive career, Lage has performed with Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Joe Lovano, Russell Malone and Bobby Hutcherson. He's also studied at various music institutions including Sonoma State University, the Ali Akbar College of Music and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. This fall, Lage begins a course of study at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
