Ravi Coltrane | Show Song List
Ravi Coltrane Son of saxophone legend John Coltrane and composer/pianist Alice Coltrane, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane was born in Huntington, NY, in 1965.
Named for the great sitar player, Ravi Shankar, Coltrane barely knew his father, who died just two years after his son's birth.

Ravi began studying the soprano sax in high school, though he halted his studies when his older brother was killed in a road accident. He began to play again at age 20, taking up the tenor sax as well as the soprano.

For a brief time Coltrane worked in his mother's band, and then joined Elvin Jones' ensemble, with whom he played for two years. He also played with Kenny Barron and Geri Allen. Coltrane and Antoine Roney formed the group Grand Central; and Coltrane recorded as a sideman for Cyrus Chestnut, Cindy Blackman, Cecil Brooks III, and Yosuke Yamashita.

Coltrane began recording his own albums in the late 1990s; Sony released Mad 6 in April of 2003.
