Dave Douglas | Show Song List

Dave Douglas Composer and trumpeter Dave Douglas was born March 24, 1963, in Montclair, New Jersey, and grew up in the metro New York area.
Dave discovered his passion for the trumpet at nine -- this after he had already been playing piano for four years and the trombone for two! He studied classical music in high school, as well as jazz, and first began to play improvisational music in public while he was in Barcelona as an exchange student in 1978.

He studied from 1981 to 1983 at both the Berklee School of Music and the New England Conservatory. In 1984 he began studying trumpet at New York University with Carmine Caruso. This was also the beginning of his involvement as a journeyman in the New York music scene, gigging with funk, jazz, and experimental groups.

In the late 1980s Douglas began to tour with various groups, including those of Horace Silver, Tim Berne, and Don Byron. 1990 marked the beginning of both his recording career and a long musical relationship with John Zorn's Masada. He also began recording and playing as part of the Tiny Bell Trio, which included percussionist Jim Black and guitarist Brad Shepik.

Douglas is committed as both a composer and performer to extending the traditional language of jazz into new territories. He credits Miles Davis as an inspiration to keep moving, musically. His discography illustrates his exploration and his willingness to embrace aspects of varied styles of music.

With over 100 recordings, including twenty as a leader, Dave Douglas has played with artists as musically far-flung as Anthony Braxton, Don Byron, Joe Lovano, Uri Caine, Suzanne Vega, Cibo Matto, Sean Lennon, Fred Hersch, Mark Dresser, Sheryl Crow, and Patricia Barber.

Douglas has written compositions for a wide range of ensembles, from jazz trios to symphony orchestras. He has also received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and has created chamber works commissioned by the Library of Congress.
