Alto sax and flute player Jerry Dodgion is a ubiquitous sideman, arranger and composer who began to play the saxophone while still in junior high schoool. |
A native of the San Francisco Bay area, Dodgion had an abundance of jazz musicians to play with as he began his career including Rudy Salvini, John Coppola/Chuck Travis and Gerald Wilson. His brief appearances with the Vernon Alley quartet gave him the opportunity to back Billie Holiday in 1955.
In 1955 Dodgion joined Benny Carter in Las Vegas for the opening of the "Moulin Rouge," and in the late '50s, he played with both Frank Sinatra and the Red Norvo quintet. His stint with the Red Norvo Quintet allowed him the chance to play with Benny Goodman, who incorporated the group into his ten piece band.
Dodgion settled in New York in 1961, and continued his rich career as a sideman. Over the past 40 years he has played with almost every big name in jazz from Dizzy Gillespie to Charles Mingus. His newest endeavor has been the formation of his own group called "The Joy of Sax", which is comprised of five saxophones and a rhythm section.
