The Snake Dens of Narcisse

audio icon Listen to the show

May 19, 1997 -- Earlier this month Alex Chadwick visited the Narcisse Wildlife Management area in Manitoba, Canada, to witness the annual spring awakening and mating of 40-thousand snakes. He joined scientists from Australia, Canada, Sweden and the United States as they descended into one of the limestone pits where the red-sided garter snakes spend the 8-month long Manitoba winter. They watched as writhing masses of snakes emerged with only one thing on their mind: To breed. Listen as Alex shares what he experienced on his latest NPR/National Geographic Radio Expedition
