The National Marine Sanctuaries

The National Marine Sanctuary program began in 1972 as a way to protect distinctive natural and cultural resources in the marine environment. Since that time 12 areas have been designated as National Marine Sanctuaries. Staff at each location conduct planning, site management and scientific research and promote education and public awareness.
