The year 2000 is here! We know technically the millennium doesn't start until 2001. But doesn't it seem like the new Century is the start of something big? ANCIENT HISTORY
Remember when you first heard about the Y2K computer bug? Early cautionary rumblings that computers could malfunction when 1999 becomes 2000 made it to the mainstream only in the past few years. By now, we've heard so much about the Y2K bug that early news stories sound almost quaint. Here's one from our archives:

Millennium Dilemma
Morning Edition - January 12, 1996
NPR's John McChesney reports that many computers used by government and industry may stop working in the year 2000. The problem has to do with the fact that many of these Audiocomputers record dates using only the last two digits of the year, and that entering 00 for 2000 will confuse many machines. (8:28)
