Susan Lee in Cairo, Egypt:
"It’s 3:07 am now and all is well in Cairo. Other than dozens of car horns honking and dozens of firecrackers going off at midnight, the Y2K fallout appears to be non-existent.

The lights are still on, the phone is working, the Internet connection is still functioning, and so far, I’ve heard nothing of terrorist attacks at the Pyramids…so far so good. I was most worried about losing water, so I stocked up on bottled water, but all appears to be working fine (and the powerful smell of chlorine suggets that the water treatment plants are functioning) ...I can only hope that the rest of this year is as peaceful."
