Heather Emrich in Munich, Germany:
"After night of music blasting, fireworks, church bells ringing in the night and sparklers shining in the snow, the new year has arrived here and the day has begun for 2000.

Two days ago I received a letter in German from my landlord which described our building's Y2K condition with words like Unbedenklichkeitsbescheinigungen (one word). Since it would have taken me another millennium to translate this, I really had no idea what they were expecting. Since midnight, I have tested electricity, water, public transportation and elevators and they have proved to be functioning well.

My husband and I spent the new year in the beautiful village of Perlach, just south of Munich. I am happy report that the beer taps here are Y2K compliant. Hangovers also have passed the test. In about an hour we will find if aspirin has a problem.

Happy New Year to All. Peace on Earth in the New Century."
