Composer Aaron Copland, best-known for developing America's musical character, was born on November 14, 1900. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth, NPR offered a special week of broadcasts featuring such acclaimed ensembles as The New York Philharmonic, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and Colorado, Oregon, and Atlanta Symphonies. To complement our programming online, we've created this Copland resource Web site.
Here, you can listen on-demand to a live U.S. Coast Guard Band concert, hear archived NPR features, and come to terms with how this New Yorker who never went west of the Hudson River as a child came to paint the most definitive musical image of our country.
