Nancy Cartwright - The Voice of Bart Simpson
Nancy Cartwright tells the story of how a British Royal guard broke his stance.
Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! - Sep. 2, 2000
Suggested by Sonia, who listens to WUSF in Tampa, Fla.:
My confession is actually a "parking lot moment." Specifically, I had pulled into my local Publix to do my Saturday morning errand at the grocery store. Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! was on, and the guest of the moment was Nancy Cartwright, probably best known as the voice of Bart Simpson. She was giving a narrative of a trip she had taken to London. Nancy explained that England had become totally mesmerized and taken in by The Simpsons. The show was on the lips of everyone, and it was a huge hit with the Brits.
Nancy continued talking about her experiences in London, and then began the story of the Royal Guards... you know, the guys with the high fuzzy hats that NEVER smile or waiver their stance.
Long story short, Nancy eventually broke the stoic stance of this one guard and actually had him laughing when she broke out in her Bart voice! She said she knew she had him when she simply asked, "Do you watch The Simpsons? She said she saw "the twinkle in his eyes."
So there I sat in my car in the parking lot as the people came and went around me on a very busy Saturday morning at the grocery store. God only knows what others were thinking as I was sitting alone in my car laughing out loud. It was a wonderful interview!
