Toure's 'Portable Promised Land'
Rolling Stone Magazine writer Toure's latest creation, The Portable Promised Land, is a collection of stories, spoofs, lists and folk tales about African-American life in the mythical Soul City.

Suggested by Angela, who listens to KNOW in Minneapolis/St. Paul:
I was on my way to visit the daughter of a friend who was moving to the city to begin school. I heard an interview with Toure, talking about his book, Portable Promised Land. When he began listing all the "religions" of followers of various soul, blues and R&B artists, I was laughing out loud at the cleverness of it. Then he read the short story about the black man who could no longer see white people, and so thought that he had erased them from the earth, of course I had to listen.
I sat in my car at the curb in front of Jill's apartment building for about ten minutes. And since I had not caught the show at the very beginning, I didn't know what it was -- just that I HAD to find out. So I'm sitting there holding pad and pen, just praying that they would say the name of this writer at the end. They did!
