listen to the audio'The Twilight Zone'
From 1959-64, Rod Serling used The Twilight Zone's eerie stories as a way to scare television audiences -- and get them to think about social issues of the day.
Morning Edition - Sep. 16, 2002
Expanded Coverage

Suggested by Randall, who listens to WXEL in West Palm Beach-Ft. Pierce, Fla.:

"As I pulled into the parking lot of my newspaper Sept. 16, your report about The Twilight Zone became my driveway moment. The weird background music and Rod Serling's voice would not let me leave the car. Earl Holliman's interview also brought back the anxiety I felt watching the episode about the abandoned town, especially the "phone booth" incident. Hard to believe that a program with that much impact ran only five years. I'm hearing that music again."
