listen to the audio'War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning'
Former combat correspondent Chris Hedges' book explores the meaning and meaninglessness of war.
Talk of the Nation - Oct. 15, 2002

Suggested by Sarah, who listens to WOI in Des Moines:

"While I have had several "Driveway Moments" (as well as numerous "Parking Lot Moments," as well) with programs I've heard on NPR, one particular segment on Talk of the Nation had me sitting in my car for at least a half hour after arriving home.

Chris Hedges, author of War is a Force that Gives Us Meaning, was giving a compelling interview of his book that I found particularly insightful to his experience of the human element of war. He spoke not only of how society often overlooks, even ridicules, this element in order to further our cause, but also described the basic elements of what it means to be a soldier today. I found his voice of reason in our uncertain times so compelling that I bought his book that afternoon. Needless to say, having completed the book, I was not dissapointed."
