Temples of Sound
Inside the great recording studios.
Morning Edition - May 8, 2003
Suggested by Rushmore, who listens to Maine Public Radio in Camden, Me.:
"I'm a musician and film composer with a deep interest and passion for the history of sound recording. I love anecdotes about recording sessions for particular songs, and I've read a lot on the subject; I have to admit that I consider myself pretty well informed.
Nevertheless, your May 8th Bob Edwards Morning Edition piece on the new book Temples of Sound gave me a new story I'd never heard: how tire chains slammed on a piece of plywood on the floor added extra impact to the snare drum on Martha Reeves and the Vandellas' Motown hit "Dancing In the Street." Ever since I first heard that recording, I've marveled at that huge snare sound, and for over 35 years I've been telling everyone who'll listen that I believe that record was the precursor to the bigger-than-life gated snare sound that became fashionable in the 1980s."
