The Sanctity of Marriage

Listen to this story...

This American Life, March 26, 2004 · A set of stories tries to understand what actually happens in marriages, during this time when the definition of marriage is up in the air. (Thanks to WBEZ and PRI, who produce the show.)

This Driveway Moment was suggested by...

Beth, who listens to WFPK in Louisville, Ky.

"I pulled into the driveway. I stayed there listening to the discussion by a happily married couple talking. Then I realized that my husband had pulled into the driveway next to me. He too remained in his car. I knew he was listening to the same program and that we were confirming that we were that happily married couple. Our conversations are always structured to not hurt the other partner. We got out of our cars, laughing, and went into the house talking about the program. Thanks for our driveway moment."

What Is a Driveway Moment?

You're driving along, listening to a story on NPR. Suddenly, you find yourself at your destination, so riveted to a piece that you sit in your idling car to hear it all the way through. That's a Driveway Moment.
