A Courageous Fight Against 'The Worst Thing'
Weekend Edition Sunday, August 21, 2005 · Seth Carey, whose essay "The Absolute Worst Thing" appeared on NPR last year, has died. He suffered from ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He could think and feel, but could not move or speak without great difficulty.

"I wasn't in the driveway, I was on a hiking trail, and getting far enough out of range I was about to lose reception. That's when 'The Absolute Worst Thing' came on the air. Within 30 seconds I was heading back down the trail to make sure I didn't miss a single word of this amazing essay."
