Life’s piano can only produce the melodies of brotherhood when it is recognized that the black keys are as basic, necessary, and beautiful as the white keys.
-- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. |
Welcome to "A King Celebration 2001," the online companion to Performance Today’s annual special commemorating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. For the 9th consecutive year, Performance Today takes you to Atlanta’s "King Week" activities -- concerts, recitals, symposia, and discussions. The cornerstone of the festivities is a two-hour concert to air nationwide on January 15, 2001 -- the official King holiday.
This site offers a multi-faceted way to celebrate Dr. King's influence. Read an essay on NPR's commitment to the holiday. Follow the week's events with our MLK Today page offering reports and pictures from Atlanta. See a Photo Gallery of the week's events. Check out this year's concerts featuring the Atlanta Symphony and hosted by PT's own Fred Child. Learn about the featured composers. Chart the chronology of Dr. King' life at our History page. And be sure to utilize our Resources for other MLK information.
Funding for "A King Celebration 2001" on NPR's Performance Today and on NPR Online is provided by the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation.
