A King Celebration 2003

On Monday January 20, 2003, NPR, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, The King Center, Morehouse College and Spelman College present the 11th annual "A King Celebration" to national radio audiences.

ASO Music Director Robert Spano leads the concert for the first time. The program features the ASO, members of the ASO Chorus, the Spelman College Glee Club, directed by Dr. Kevin Johnson; the Morehouse College Glee Club, directed by Dr. David Morrow; and WSB-TV news anchor Monica Kaufman as narrator. Since 1994 this annual event has become one of the most celebrated national musical tributes to Dr. King, heralding the African-American experience in classical music.

The concert will be broadcast over more than 250 public radio stations nationally on NPR's daily classical music program, Performance Today®. NPR's Fred Child will host. For nationwide station information and broadcast times, please check our stations page.

CONCERT PROGRAM
The program will begin with the first two movements of Mozart's Requiem with members of the ASO Chorus and the Morehouse and Spelman Glee Clubs joining the ASO. Next is Barber's well-known elegy, Adagio for Strings, followed by Beethoven's Leonore Overture No. 3.

The final piece in the program is Undine Smith Moore's Scenes from the Life of A Martyr featuring the ASO with the Spelman and Morehouse College Glee Clubs.

Additionally, several members of the Atlanta University Center faculty are featured as soloists including Dr. Laura English-Robinson, soprano, voice instructor at Spelman College; Crystal M. Harris, mezzo-soprano, coordinator of voice activities at Clark Atlanta University; Melvin Foster, tenor, assistant professor of voice in the music department at Morehouse College; as well as Martin Woods, baritone, Morehouse College Senior Music Major. WSB-TV News Anchor Monica Kaufman will narrate.

The corporate sponsor for "A King Celebration" is Worldspan. "A King Celebration" is made possible though a collaboration of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, NPR, The King Center and Morehouse and Spelman Colleges. The concert is supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the City of Atlanta, Bureau of Cultural Affairs, and the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation. A Host Committee was formed to increase awareness of the event and to raise funds for scholarships at Morehouse and Spelman. Honorary chairpersons for the committee are Georgia-Pacific Corporation's chairman, CEO and president A.D. ("Pete") Correll and wife, Ada Lee Correll.
