FATHER CARES: THE LAST OF JONESTOWN (I) -- Weekly Edition inaugurates a new feature this weekend, the best of the best: Award-winning pieces from the NPR Archives, along with background on the stories. This week, we'll spend the
entire hour remembering a program that won a Silver Baton from the DuPont Columbia awards, as well as the prestigious Prix Italia in 1981. "Father Cares: The Last of Jonestown" tells the story of the Reverend Jim Jones and his followers, in the months leading up the 1978 murder-suicide in the jungles of Guyana that left more than 900 men, women, and children dead. Author James Reston Jr. came to NPR with over 500 hours of tape actually recorded by Reverend Jones and his followers at Jonestown. Producer Deborah Amos (now with ABC News) worked with Reston to produce a chilling narrative telling the story of Jonestown using the voices of many who were there. We'll hear significant portions of Father Cares... plus, a conversation with Deborah Amos about the issues and decisions involved in producing the documentary. ((STEREO)) (22:30)
FATHER CARES: THE LAST OF JONESTOWN (II) -- Neal continues his conversation with producer Deborah Amos.... followed by the conclusion to Father Cares: The Last of Jonestown. ((STEREO)) (28:30)
