John Ydstie and the Wolford Wolves
March 24, 2001
The Wolford Wolves. Guard John Ydstie wore the 30 jersey. |
When the Wolves returned to Wolford after the game, a convoy escorted the team to homecoming. |
Thirty-three years ago, John Ydstie and the Wolford Wolves made it all the
way to the finals of North Dakota's Class B Boys High School basketball
tournament. It was the first time any team from Wolford, a town of less than
100 souls, made it to the state tournament.
John talks with his coach and two of his teammates about the season and what it meant to their small town. People from Wolford still talk about that game played in 1968.
John now stars on the NPR intra-squad basketball team, where he can still
drive to the hoop and hit the occasional jumper.
Hear Russ Smith call the 1968 game between the Wolford Wolves and the
Central Cass Squirrels. Thanks to Don Siverson of Fargo, North Dakota for sharing his tape of the game.
