Ten Years on, City Still Coping with Riots' Impacts

May 4, 2002 -- Weekend Edition Saturday this week spends an hour examining Los Angeles 10 years after the worst civic unrest in the United States in the 20th century.

Scott Simon and several staffers spent several days in L.A. last week on the anniversary of the three days of riots that broke out after the Rodney King verdict was announced.

This special presentation includes a report from the corner of Florence and Normandie, epicenter of the rioting; a look at the economy of the city, and the realities faced by people trying to revitalize depressed areas; a ride though Los Angeles neighborhoods with a police officer; an examination of the dispute over the presence of liquor stores in poor areas; a look at whether community policing has been effective; and much more.
