Dr. Isosceles
In a shameless grab for airplay on National Public Radio, the Massachusetts-based rock band Dr. Isosceles included the lyrics "I would like to talk to, if I could choose anyone talking today, I'm thinking of Liane, that's Liane Hansen/She likes musicians who really play fine..." in a song called Moving Some Units from the Root Hog Records release, 8 Cents Is Your Birthday.

Nils Petter Molvaer
Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer has obviously been influenced by the likes of Miles Davis and Don Cherry, but his breathy tone backed by jungly beats also recalls avant-garde trumpeter Jon Hassell. His new cd, Solid Ether, is one of the most adventurous rock/hip-hop oriented titles yet on ECM Records.

Tortoise
Striking use of sound, melody, noise, and studio techniques has made Tortoise one of the hottest bands on the terrific Thrill Jockey label. Their new cd is Standards.

Jonatha Brooke
Singer/songwriter formerly from The Story, a duo with Jennifer Kimball, has a powerful new pop cd, which includes duets with Michael Franti and Neil Finn. Called Steady Pull, it's on her Bad Dog Records label and available through her website, www.jonathabrooke.com.

Bill Frisell
The wonderfully versatile guitarist has knocked out another home run with this cd, Blues Dream on Nonesuch Records.

Ron Carter
Bassist Ron Carter's latest tasty Latin cd is When Skies Are Grey on Blue Note Records.
