Meet The Jazz Audience: Alheli Alvarado, Romy Sanchez, Josh String

In the last few decades, June has become the busiest month for jazz in New York City, home to the biggest jazz scene in the world. But who is actually going to these shows? A small team of Bloggers Supreme has been attending the festivities — primarily, the CareFusion Jazz Festival New York. In between our reports on various goings-on, we'll be talking to the some of the people who are actually in the audience. We start off every conversation with the simple question: how did you hear about this show? And be sure to check out more of our Meet The Jazz Audience series. —Ed.

Where did you hear about this concert? Alheli: Actually, I found out about it from some friends who study at the Manhattan School of Music, and I was just curious to come to the Jazz Gallery and see the program. And it was a great revelation to me.

And you were the one who brought your friends along. Alheli: Yes, everyone here.

Are you a musician yourself? Alheli: No, just an aficionado, an amateur, yea.

Do you guys normally go out to a lot of jazz concerts? Alheli: Well, I go to the Jazz Standard sometimes.

How does this compare to what you see normally? Romy: I think it looked much more like a specialist's place, I don't know? A habitue place, or something more—

Josh: A professionals' place.

Romy: Yea, a professionals' place. I went to the Blue Note, and this is maybe the opposite to me, you know?

Right. So what did you think of the performance? Romy: Oh, it was excellent. I mean, I'm also an amateur, totally, but I felt it was really great.

Josh: Yea, this is the first show I've been to in New York. I used to live in Washington, D.C., where there's lots of good jazz, but I thought this was terrific.

One more request: could I take all of your photos? Alheli: Wow, this is getting so glamorous! [all pose] Romy: Do I look jazzy?
