The folks at JazzCorner recently tipped me off to their musician conversation podcast series called InnerViews. This series is new to me, but the archives date back to late 2009, and the site claims it sees about a million downloads per episode. (!) Veteran public radio reporter Reese Ehrlich and JazzCorner's founder Lois Gilbert conduct and produce the interviews. I'm currently enjoying the discussion Gilbert had with Donal Fox, a pianist fluent in both classical composition and jazz improvisation. I don't know his work very well, but the bits of his "Piazzolla to Bach" project which surface during the interview intrigue me, and any time drummer Dafnis Prieto is in the band, the group is worth listening to. This is not to be confused with the work of Anil Prasad, who also does in-depth interviews with musicians under the brand Innerviews. One of the great things about what Prasad does is that he seems to be interested in all different types of music, so that jazz musicians mix it up with rock, folk, "world," composition-oriented and other unclassifiable un-genres. He's got a book of these interviews coming out Oct. 19, featuring chats with McCoy Tyner, Joe Zawinul, Stanley Clarke and David Torn — among others. He also has a new iPhone app for reading these interviews on the go. And of course, there is the massive archive, dating back well over a decade. [Website: Innerviews: Music Without Borders]
